Fresh Pineapples
Pineapples from Northeast India, especially Assam and Nagaland, are known for their exceptional sweetness, low acidity, and rich aroma. Grown in the hilly terrains and organic-rich soil of the region, these pineapples are naturally ripened without the use of chemicals. The Queen variety from Assam and the Kew variety from Nagaland are particularly prized for their unique taste, making them a sought-after tropical fruit in both domestic and export markets.
The pineapple season in Northeast India, including Assam and Nagaland, typically runs from May to August. This is when the fruit reaches peak ripeness, offering the best flavor and sweetness. In some areas, especially in Nagaland and parts of Tripura and Meghalaya, a second, smaller harvest may occur around October to November, depending on local climatic conditions.
Both Kew Pineapple and Queen Pineapple are grown in Karbi Anglong, Assam, a region known for its high-quality pineapples. While Tripura’s Queen Pineapple has a GI tag, Karbi Anglong is also a major producer of these two pineapple varieties.
- High Juice Content: It has a softer texture and less fiber, making it ideal for juice production.
- Mildly Sweet: Compared to the Queen variety, Kew is less sweet but still flavorful.
- Longer Shelf Life: Due to its tough skin, it is suitable for transportation over long distances.
